Neah Bay Physical Computing Outreach

Starting in 2017, UW HCDE's department developed a program to bring STEM outreach to K-12 in underserved communities during spring break. As part of a team, we designed, tested, and ultimately taught a week long, physical computing course for middle schoolers in Neah Bay. You can read more about the annual project here.
My partner and I focused on connecting kids to the world around them with the technology. They learned to code, in simplified blocks, "badges" they could earn on their bracelet, representing different types of adventures they could encounter on their journey outdoors. Each one represented a different sensory input on the device. For example, if the bracelet experienced darkness, the yellow LED on the bracelet lit up, indicating that badge was earned.
